My students need 10 engaging materials for the light/sound unit., including 1 slinky, 1 wave apparatus, 1 resonance box, 1 resonance kit, etc. to set up interactive stations.
Mary Dunbar said,"We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light." Each of my students is unique and important, and it is my hope to inspire them to find their own special light through an exciting science unit on light.
My students are energetic 6th graders who enjoy hands-on, minds-on science.
We live in a small rural farming community where the latest in technology is not available in most science classrooms. My 80+ students fill my day with questions about the world they live in. These materials would provide much needed equipment to make the light/sound unit come alive for them.
My Project
In trying to prepare my students to face the challenge of competing not only with students in the United States for future jobs, but also competing globally, it is necessary to provide them with materials that make a connection to the real world. Fiber optics, laser technology, and sound as energy fulfills this requirement.
Some areas of science are easy to provide hands-on materials for study. Teaching the physics of light and sound is not one of these units. The materials, though not consumable, are expensive. It is difficult to teach this unit without them. My middle school students are very visual, and these materials will provide an exciting experience for my students. The materials can be used in stations that my students can rotate through so class sets are not required.
I am hoping to ignite not only a passion for learning, but perhaps a desire to pursue physics as a career long after the light/sound unit is done.
Physics is one of the least pursued areas of study by my past students entering college. My desire is to change that by showing my students how exciting this area of science can truly be.
