My Students

In a world of disorder and inconsistency, students in low-income communities need stability. I want my classroom to be the place where they can be safe and secure, and begin their pursuit to reach for the stars.

But, let us first consider the ground beneath their feet.

Here in Florida, my students are mostly of Haitian descent, ranging from recently arrived to fully assimilated; unable to speak English to fluent in both English and slang. They have a bevy of cultural history, but also an abundance of shame and embarrassment at their circumstances. Nonetheless, my students are so respectful, enthusiastic, ambitious, community-oriented and hard working. I can truly say in this brief week, I have grown to love and care for 150 babies. They attend a school that has recently risen to C level, and are now striving to B great. The changes have been immense, but these gifted and advanced students are on the precipice of true achievement. Moreover, I fear most for my boys in middle school. This is the age that could make or break their future. I refuse to watch idly; they will succeed.

My Project

This is where these resources come in to the vision for my classroom. My students will truly REACH for the STARS this year through prioritized areas of rigorous readings and organization. Instilling the desire to be challenged with rigorous texts and challenging work, paired with the high expectation that my students value every single paper that is given to them, is a change that will outlast my year as their teacher, making it truly transformational.

And this is what I am here for.

To change the lives of my students by being the chance opportunity most people who overcome the achievement gap have, but they will have it everyday. I want to transform their educational experience and thereby change their lives. So that one day, one of my kids can truly reach the stars as an astronaut, astronomer, poet, doctor or if they are lucky, a teacher.
