Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach tenth grade students Earth Science in Manhattan. The majority of our student reside in low-income communities and a significant portion of them are either English language learners or receive special education services.

Our school's mission is to promote an environmental awareness but this can be a daunting task when many of the students have a limited science background.

My students face a number of obstacles in their quest to learn Earth Science. The most pressing hindrance, though, is their difficulty reading, both in regards to the native and non-native students. As a result, many of the topics covered in our curriculum are never fully learned and/or understood by my students. These concepts, however, could be easily explained if the students were able to draw and comprehend diagrams and other pictorial images. Our school's mission is to promote an environmental awareness but this can be a daunting task when many of the students have a limited science background.

My Project

I am requesting the donation of 2 classroom sets of markers and 4 classroom sets of colored pencils. I believe that when given the materials, my students will be eager and willing to begin drawing pictures and diagrams that would greatly facilitate their learning process.

The donation of the aforementioned materials would greatly enhance the learning experience of my students.

It is quite common for students to come to school with little more than a pen or pencil, if that, and given their difficulty reading and writing it is no shock to me that they perform poorly on state and class exams. I believe that, when given an adequate supply of coloring utensils, I could engage these students and communicate ideas to them that had previously struggled with.
