My Students

I have been playing soccer after school with many of my students for two years. Due to few other opportunities to play organized sports in the neighborhood or at school, for one hour each week the gym becomes a packed, sweaty melting pot of our student body. It's great! But, our soccer goals broke.

We have a large number of immigrants from West Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean who grew up surrounded by the sport.

When they step into the gym they feel at home. For many of these students who are struggling to make friends, learn a language or transition to life in a new country, soccer helps build bridges. Not only do they fit in, but for one hour each week, they get a chance to shine. Other student simply have grown up only exposed to basketball or nothing at all. Girls at my school are locked into outdated stereotypes where they simply do not participate in athletics except for jumping rope. Soccer becomes a place where all of these students can finally feel part of a team and feel successful. When a 5th grade student steals the ball from an 8th grader or when a 13-year-old shoots past the art teacher, those small events go a long way in the lives of my students.

My Project

This is why I am asking for new mini-goals to replace the old ones that broke from too much use (a very good way for them to go!). I would love to continue our weekly tradition that we have started over the past two years. These new goals and pinnies will ensure that students of multiple genders, ages and nationalities will have the chance to work and play together.
