My Students

Our school has just added social studies as a core subject, but we do not have sufficient resources!

We are a founding charter school in East Los Angeles.

Our school is part of the charter network featured in the movie “Waiting for Superman”. All of our students come from underserved communities. The majority of our students are young English language learners that are quickly adapting to the English language and would benefit from listening to read-alongs. They are highly motivated and talented students that have the grit and zest to get to and through college! Our school is built on the belief that great schools and strong relationships transform communities. Through rigorous standards-based instruction, character development, and learning experiences beyond school walls, our elementary students will become active leaders who take pride in their community and have access to choice and opportunity in order to ignite transformative change.

My Project

The benefits to receiving the requested materials are twofold: our students will benefit both academically and culturally. The social studies read-alongs will foster the independent growth of students both in fluency and reading comprehension. They will be engaged in the active read-alongs, increasing their exposure to the English language. The read-alongs will be a part of a learning center in the classroom where up to four students will be able to participate in a read-along at a time. The read-along CDs that I have requested will also help our students learn about themselves, one another, and other cultures. The subject matter of the read-alongs ranges from overcoming fears of going to school to learning about diverse cultures, which are both extremely relevant topics for our students.

These materials will allow our students to practice their reading comprehension strategies, improve fluency, and give them an opportunity to explore other cultures!

The level of engagement will be tremendous as students participate in read-alongs with their classmates!
