My Students

Please help my students by giving them the opportunity to learn the ukulele! They are excited to learn an instrument and experience music in a new way. Ukuleles would enhance their musical experience in school through writing original music, figuring out chords to pop songs, and rocking out!

My students are in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in a rural community in NY.

We are a close knit school, and teachers and administration have a lot of pride in our students. They thrive on school activities, whether it be sports, band, or participating in the musical. While we have a healthy elementary band program, we do not offer stringed instruments in school. They are open minded and very creative, and willing to try new things!

My Project

Having ukuleles will allow my students to be engaged in learning about music theory while playing an instrument that is correctly sized for them and easy to learn by watching. Gaining this knowledge benefits ear training, and will lead to a greater understanding of chord progressions in popular songs. I believe in keeping music education current, and showing students how to recreate music that they currently enjoy. The ease of the instrument will allow us to go further with projects like writing commercial jingles and "mini-musicals". The confidence that the students acquire will hopefully inspire them to create music outside of the school and have a lifelong relationship with music making!

Having ukuleles in music class would reignite the students' passion for music in school.

They would be able to use the ukuleles for many purposes, and because of the simplicity of the instrument, they will be inspired to play more, sing more, and create more. I believe my students deserve the opportunity to play a stringed instrument and enhance their musical experience.
