Finger painting is fun, but can you imagine having to use your fingers to paint or write with all of the time? My students have difficulty with drawing and painting details on our iPad and desire more accurate results. This could be possible if we had styluses.
My students enjoy exploring art in many mediums.
They celebrate their successes online by sharing their work with family and friends in their online art galleries http://bit.ly/nWmNU8. As much as they like seeing their work showcased online, they desire more opportunities to create art using 21st Century tools and technology.
My Project
Toward the end of the school year, my district included my art program in their iPad Pilot, which enabled my students and I to use one first generation iPad in the art room. They were so engaged and excited about using digital painting apps on the iPad. These abstract digital paintings were created using their fingers http://bit.ly/lbZKAg.
When using apps such as "Brushes" or other drawing and painting apps, students became frustrated because their fingers did not allow them to achieve the accuracy they desired. If they had digital styluses, they would be able to create more desirable results. Their fingers and hands tend to block their view. Using styluses would allow them to have more space between their work and their fingers. Having that distance would make it possible for them to connect lines, add detail, and flood shapes.
Students would also be able to paint and draw more realistic subject matter such as portraits and still lifes using styluses.
Helping us to purchase styluses would allow my students to apply their existing knowledge of using traditional painting and drawing tools to create successful work digitally.
Styluses would feel like drawing and painting tools in their hands, which would help them to develop confidence, achieve better results, and would enable them to learn skills that they could apply to their educational and future careers.
