Which way would you rather learn about microscopes, from a book, or hands-on experience? I found my answer when I took my 5th graders to Marineland to learn about marine biology. Some had never seen a microscope and loved using it! Now I would love a set for my 3rd graders.
Rymfire Elementary School is located in Palm Coast, Floridaâs Flagler County School District.
We are considered a Title 1 School, meaning we have a high ratio of low-income families. Flagler County currently has a14.6% unemployment rate, 11.3% below poverty-level (as per 2010 Census). Fifty-three percent of the students at Rymfire Elementary School receive free or reduced lunch, and 5% of the student population is considered ELL. Rymfire E.S. has a high turn-over rate as families cannot find jobs and therefore cannot pay mortgage or rent.
My Project
Science should be a hands-on learning experience. Much of the third grade curriculum includes learning and practice of the scientific process. Four microscopes are the perfect way to incorporate learning this concept, along with enhancing visual observation of various scientific samples. Microscopes will be placed in science learning centers that can be incorporated into cross-curriculum activities including reading, writing, and mathematics. Students will read about a particular topic, observe microscopic samples collected outdoors, or on ready-made slides. Students will confirm hypothesis, write describing observations, and graph data. Students will learn that a microscope is the quintessential tool of scientists.
When considering options a child has to learn science, think about which science class you enjoyed most: the class that allowed you to experience science the way it ought to be learned- through hands-on experiences, or the science class in which you learned all concepts from a textbook.
Today's teachers must compete with video games, technology, and television. Incorporating engaging science activities such as a microscope center remains an imperative option for learning science objectives.
