My Students

There are some experiences that you have in life that just happen to stay with you for the rest of your life. Looking through their eyes into the internal structure of a mammals eye will be one for the students in my classroom.

I have a group of 7th graders who are really just beginning their formal study of science.

They are excited to study the natural world. We are lucky that our school has a separate laboratory classroom that is shared with the three science teachers' classes. It supplies a different venue for learning and the students are always enthusiastic to leave the mundane everyday classroom environment. Unfortunately, we are a school within a very low socioeconomic community and have been tagged as having the hightest drop out rate in the state. The excitement of formal education does not always emanate far from those walls.

My Project

With the materials donated in this project, the students will first examine the general structure of the mammals eye by looking at the eye model. We will be focusing on how light passes through the structures, especially the lens, and sends an image to the brain. After this we will be heading into the science laboratory to dissect one of the three types of eyes. This will be a teacher led dissection and we will once again examine the structures and review how light passes through. The students will then be given the other two types of mammal eyes and the students will be dissecting them independently. The students will be expected to make observations and write an essay comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences in the types of eyes they have just encountered.

This will be many to all of the students first formal mammalian dissection.

It will not only be an exciting adventure for them but will also stimulate higher levels of thinking by forcing them to use great observation and inferencing skills. By donating to this project you will be sure to send the enthusiasm for learning vibrating through the walls of our school.
