Environmentally Friendly Literature Circles

My students need 30 copies of "Scat" by Carl Hiaasen because we are going to do a 3 novel literature circle, and this is the only book I do not have resources for.

My Students

In the world we live in we have to be more knowledgeable about environmental issues. I will introduce Carl Hiaasen's three novels Hoot, Flush, and Scat to my students as a way for them to know what the issues are and what they can do to help. This unit gets kids on board to a better world.

My students are in a Magnet program that allows them to get a head start on organizational skills, study skills, and some high school credit is given.

While these students do have some parental support at home, since we are in a public school setting a lot of times I don't have the resources to challenge these students to the their ultimate potential. Last year I did this novel unit activity with my students and they absolutely loved it. We read 3 novels of a trilogy by Lois Lowry.(The Giver, Messenger, and Gathering Blue) The only road block I have to not being able to provide this to this great group of kids is the resources for the book SCAT. I am excited to be able to use the lesson plan and resources to challenge these students and challenge myself to use different books.

My Project

This is an opportunity to give back to the public school system, and educate kids about the environment. While we are embarking on this wonderful adventure we will also be working with the benchmarks for Language Arts. This particular lesson covers a lot of skills and proves fun for students. They will even make movies on the the novels they read.

This project teaches about the important issues we face today and it teaches the skills students need to go on to the next grade level.

It is fun, exciting, unique, and everyone reads a novel and embarks upon an experience they have never had before.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
