Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine your life without having access to the Internet. That's what my students are up against, yet they are the students who need every edge, every advantage possible. As English Language Learners, they need to connect with creative and unique opportunities to learn to read and write in English.
My third grade students attend an urban, neighborhood, public school in Illinois.
There will be almost 30 students in our classroom by the end of September. There is a 99% poverty rate at our school and most students are English Language Learners. My students are motivated and excited to come to school, but motivation is all they have. We are continuously learning to read and write, which is a tremendous challenge for bilingual students. Our school is a year old so we are still acquiring materials and curriculum for our students, but we are making huge progress.
My Project
I'm asking for a lot, I get it. Some teachers are asking for books and pencils. I'm thinking bigger and asking for technology. We have a wireless connection at our school and I want to exploit it. iPads are cheaper than most computers and a lot more flexible. I've connected with teachers across the city who are using iPads to teach reading in exciting and innovative ways. They've used the multimedia capabilities to put mini-lessons, book talks, and word work on tablets. They have shown me how to reach special needs students who need extra support. iPads allow kids to write and publish monitored blogs and wikis, while reading other students' work. I will be able to reach students in these dynamic ways and I expect my students to respond tenfold. iPads have been proven to motive students to learn. I want to provide them with the resources that their suburban counterparts already have access to at home.
My project closes the digital gap between students of poverty and the technology they need to survive in the digital age.
This is a chance for us to expose students to the entire world, not just the 3 blocks surrounding their apartments. Technology can be used to connect students around the world. It is a unique opportunity to show my kids why reading and writing are still the most critical skills they can have in the 21st century.
