Instant Assessment of My Whole Class Using White Boards!
My students need their own white boards to show me what they know, and then I can instantly assess their learning so that I can change the way I am teaching in real time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every student, from the scared to the confident, should have a chance to show the teacher what they know and do not know. Individual white boards will give every student a chance to participate their knowledge and allow the teacher to modify instruction in real time!
My 6th grade students are of high poverty and high need.
They are also of high spirit and high energy. They attend a school that has been taken over by the state of Mississippi under conservatorship for the past two years. Their school is failing, and yet it still does not have money to provide the basic resources for them.
My Project
I am implementing disciplinarian strategies to strengthen my students' motivation and work ethic in my science classroom. They need to pass and they need to succeed in school. Education is the only way people can become truly free and the odds are against them. Thus, my class needs to be run with a firm grasp, so that no student is left behind. This means a lot of individual and silent work interspersed with engaging group activities. However, the majority of class instruction is done on a classwide basis, where each student is in control of their own learning process. This creates a need for the teacher to have instant assessment occur on a daily basis, so that the teacher can modify, change, or move on quickly to material that better engages their young minds. The individual white boards will be used by every student to show the teacher what they know or what they are not understanding. The boards will be used EVERYDAY to assess student learning!
In the age of instant learning and e-learning at a school that does not have a workable computer lab my students need all the help that is available to them.
The class set of white boards will provide instant assessment of student learning so that I can adjust and modify my teaching techniques in real time for the best student outcomes.
