Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Today's students must be proficient with technology to compete in the future workplace. My students are no exception, yet they face many challenges. Most of them don't have computers at home, their parents lack computer skills, and they don't have adequate access to technology at school.
Our K-5th graders are enthusiastic about learning and love being in school.
70% of our students are classified as English Learners. Another 20% started out speaking another language, but are now classified as English proficient. Students learning in a second language thrive on hands-on learning experiences with visual aids and constant feedback. This is exactly the support that technology can provide.
The families of our students care deeply about education and want to support their children, yet they often lack the means to do it. 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Lack of education, language barriers, and economic hardships all hinder these parents from providing the academic support they wish to give to their kids.
Our school is dedicated to giving our students the basic skills they need in terms of reading, writing, and math. However, technology tends not to be priority, even though it could support these basic skills and build computer literacy.
My Project
My students need access to computers that will both support their development in the basic academic content areas and support their ability to use computers effectively. Netbooks are a great choice because they are portable and inexpensive, yet provide a typical personal computing experience.
With these two additional computers, students will be able to work in groups to do research projects in the classroom as part of the daily curriculum. They will have time to work independently on typing and word processing skills. Students will also use the power of the Internet to communicate with each other using simulated (and safe) social networking sites. Through these sites students will respond to literature in discussion boards and experience the joy of publishing their ideas instantly to share with their peers. In addition, a world of internet resources will be opened up to help students practice skills in a fun, hands-on manner. The possibilities are endless.
Without access to computers in the classroom itself, these students will rarely be exposed to technology.
Children need time to experiment with computers and need to actually use them for a purpose in order to really become technologically proficient. My students currently do not have this opportunity at home or in school. My mission is to give every student an equal opportunity to succeed. To really have a chance at success, these kids need equal access to technology. They need your help!
