My students need non-fiction books, learning centers, kits, and games about plants in order to learn how they grow. They also need tools and seeds to plant the community garden.
They say you reap what you sow... so we need tools in order to learn about the plants that we will grow, harvest, and ultimately donate to a local food pantry. Teaching students how to care for living things and help others in need will stay with them throughout their lives.
Our school has a low income, primarily bilingual population, where our students thrive when working on projects and hands-on applications of the material they are learning.
They are motivated learners, who need special opportunities to inspire them and keep them interested. By providing an opportunity for them to take ownership of a project and see it through from start to finish, these students will take pride in their work and share their progress with others.
My Project
When students have a purpose behind their content knowledge, they are able to internalize their understandings and retain what they have learned. By having materials that span across curricular areas, students can be exposed to and learn from many inputs. The variety of materials selected will allow for my students to learn about plants and flowers, grow them within the classroom and learn about the care of plants, and finally transport them to the community garden which will be dug and started in the spring. I hope that they will see the benefits of growing plants, caring for and maintaining a garden, and donating crops to a local food pantry for those in greater need.
Books, models, tools, and sample plants will allow for the students to learn first hand about plants and their purpose in our world.
The students will have a chance to get involved and take pride in what they are doing. With the materials available, students will have a chance to create their community garden and continue to care for it for many years to come.
