My Students

Do you remember how dry and dense your philosophy homework was? My students need a broad understanding of philosophical rhetoric, and they need a great story to give it meaning!

My students attend an urban school where the poverty rate is high and access to quality resources is minimal.

They are brilliant thinkers and hard workers, but our district doesn't provide them with literature which challenges them or pushes them to higher levels of thinking.

My Project

Sophie's World is a novel from the AP reading list, and it will introduce my students to philosophy through an engaging narrative. The story follows a young girl, Sophie, as she grapples with the biggest questions in philosophy and a mysterious teacher who leaves assignments in her mailbox. This novel will help spur students' thinking and help them contextualize the most important literature in the Western canon without inundating them with dry philosophical essays.

This project will guarantee a better understanding of classic literature and Western thought, as well as provide background information on the most important philosophers in the history of the West.
