THROW UP Your Hands to Learn About an Owl's Food Chain
My students need a class set of owl pellets to investigate, an owl pellet flip chart instruction guide, and a group of interactive books on the food chain.
"Puke!" "Vomit!" "Upchuck!" "Throw Up!" Watching students' enthusiasm as they experience their first interaction with a regurgitated owl pellet is one of the great joys of teaching. The materials I am requesting can help foster this excitement.
I teach fifth grade at a neighborhood school in RI.
My students are a diverse group with various learning needs and challenges. We are a Title 1 school, which means that many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students do not have experiences and encounters with wildlife and nature.
My Project
In 5th grade, my students learn about the flow of the sun's energy throughout an ecosystem. This can be a very abstract topic, especially for the city dwelling students in my school. Owls are a unique type of animal that eats their prey whole, uses the food for energy, and then regurgitates a pellet. This pellet contains fur and bones and is a fascinating way to study the food cycle. These owl pellets (which have been specially cleaned) will be dissected and investigated as an introductory lesson to the food cycle. Following the activity, students will study various other food chains using the set of interactive books. This is an experience and understanding that just cannot be obtained from textbooks!
Have you ever watched a child get excited about learning?
It is hard for this to occur unless students are exposed to a variety of real-life experiences; and materials are needed to make this happen. Your generosity can help bring science to life in a hands-on investigation that my students are sure to remember.
