Minnesota Geology: A Resource for Inquisitive Students!

My students need the book Minnesota Geology to use as a valuable and accurate resource as they learn about the complex processes that have shaped Minnesota.

My Students

Minnesota has been shaped by a number of complex processes through geologic time. Do you remember reading that awful textbook that put you to sleep at night? My students need a book that accurately and clearly helps them understand Minnesota's geologic history.

My students are inquisitive and aspire to understand class material.

The students are in combined classes of ninth and tenth grade and work together cooperatively on most projects and assignments. As Montessori students, they are asked to work independently of teachers on topics that spark their interest under broader topics (the state standards). The Earth Science students will be asked to choose a geographic region that they are interested in and discover the geologic history of that region and present it to the class.

My Project

After taking a field trip, researching, or looking at pictures, students will begin to hypothesize how a geographic region in Minnesota has been formed. Students will then be able to analyze what they have discovered and formulate a hypothesis as to the formation. The book, Minnesota's Geology, will enable students to search out specific regions in Minnesota and discover what processes geologists think shaped that region so the students can compare their hypothesis to those of trained geologists. The book offers such great pictures and notes that it is like having a geologist in the room!

These books will make the difference between students getting accurate information and getting information off the Internet on wikipedia and other online sources that may not be correct.

I would love to offer my high school students an appropriate piece of work to help them learn how geology has shaped Minnesota in a meaningful and lasting way.
