Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I was a child, I remember how excited I was to go to school on Scholastic News Day! I loved learning about real social studies and science topics via my own personal magazine! Today, with tight budgets, my students don't have the luxury of having Scholastic News purchased for them like I did.
My students love to read as much as I did and still do today!
They especially enjoy non-fiction, real world selections and computer-based learning. My students attend a Southern California school with very high expectations, but with little to no budget for purchasing enrichment supplies. Parents at our school site often have difficulties purchasing the needed school supplies.
My Project
Scholastic News will provide enrichment opportunities for my students in the areas of social studies and science. Each week, my students will learn about concepts such as polar animals, Constitution Day, fire safety, bats, nutrition, Earth Day and much, much more! They will learn about these concepts through age-appropriate texts, vivid photographs, and comprehension activities. Each weekly edition also has a paired online component that will allow access to the current and past Scholastic News magazines, as well as to topic related videos, vocabulary, and extended learning opportunities!
Not only will my students be able to access social studies and science through their very own copies of Scholastic News Magazine, but they will also have online access to their weekly selections, as well as to the related and extended content.
The online component will be extremely beneficial during our weekly computer time, which will allow my students to delve more deeply into the theme of the week or past weeks. They will also have their own copies to take home and share with their families!
