My students need to be blinded with new science materials, especially in the area of alternative energy! They need 26 books, including "Atoms and Molecules," "The Energy Mix," "Biomass Power," and "Philosophy, Invention, and Engineering."
I serve a high school student body of over 1100 students (in 3 autonomous small schools) who represent the world with a free and reduced lunch percentage that exceeds 70%, so these students won't be running to a bookstore to buy books.
We are a smaller learning community model with 3 autonomous high schools (serving approx.
350 students each) on one campus. Two of the 3 schools have an emphasis on science and engineering, with a strong STEMS connection. Yet the library materials are not keeping up with the curriculum and not everything can or should be found on the web. Some students, especially those who struggle to read because of learning disabilities or English not being the primary language, can be better served with print materials.
My Project
Most of the books on this list deal with subjects requested by both students and staff. Alternative energy sources, engineering and inspirational stories of scientists, astronauts and inventors will all appeal to both students and staff members looking for ways to connect science and engineering with student lives.
Help all my students in all three schools by blinding them with your generosity.
Without these books the kids will not be able to connect their present lives with their future lives and careers. Science rocks so inspire them to read all about it.
