Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All students deserve the ability to be exposed to the wonders of science. Without the basic tools, students can not have the ability to learn science, find inspiration when learning the skills with science tools, or be motivated to pursue a science, engineering, technology, or math career.
I teach in a charter school located in the North East Los Angeles area.
The majority of my students are Socially Economically Disadvantaged, minorities with the goal to make a difference and attend a college. The larger part of my students will be the first in their families to go to college. Being mostly underrepresented in science degree programs and science professions, it is important to me to ensure that all my students can get as much exposure to science as possible.
Given the situation my students live in, they are not exposed to any real science at home or in their community and it is up to me to make sure that their experience is exciting enough for them to be interested in pursuing some kind of science, engineering, technology, or math profession. I am confident that, by experiencing the fun of science through hands-on activities, I will be to make their science experience motivating and enriching for all my students.
My Project
Imagine the first time you placed a pair of goggles on your face and draped on an apron in your science class. You felt like a true scientist heating up some kind of chemical under a Bunsen burner. What if you did not have the opportunity to be exposed to such basic tools? The ability to be use basic scientific equipment in inquiry lessons helps students gain the expose to science skills and increase motivation in the sciences.
We need basic lab materials, including beakers, aprons, goggles and more, for them to be able to experience science, learn scientific lab techniques, and develop a greater understanding and love for science.
Every student deserves the chance to feel like a scientist in a classroom. The ability to use and understand the functions of the basic tools of science are indispensable for motivating future scientist and engineers.
With the majority of my students being Socially Economically Disadvantaged and underrepresented minorities, it is important to me that they are able to have the ability to find science worthwhile by having the inquiry based lessons in the classroom.
Which cannot happen without science tools. With the needed tools, motivation and enthusiasm for the sciences, achievement, and the potential for students to become professionals in science, engineering, technology, or mathematics increases.
