This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever had your school year end early because of a devastating tornado? My students have. On May 22nd our school was hit by an E2 tornado that caused over $500,000 in damages. 90% of the roof was lost and the interior of the building has extensive water damage.
My students attend a K-7 public charter elementary school in Minnesota.
Our student population is 24% Hispanic and 75% African American with less than 2% Caucasian and Native American students. 23% percent do not speak English as their primary language. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch benefits.
Our students are hard working, appreciative and polite. They never take anything for granted and always put their best foot forward.
My Project
My students need 3 bean bags, 2 rugs, games, etc. to create a Reading Relief Corner where they can relax and practice their reading skills. With a Reading Relief corner, my students will be able to escape the real life devastation they have recently been through by letting their reading skills take them to other imaginative places. Through reading and listening to stories my students will find comfort, relief, laughter and joy along with practicing their reading and listening skills. The bean bag chairs, rug and listening center will benefit my students in numerous ways.
Donations to this project will make an immeasurable difference in the lives of my students.
Having recently lived through such a tragic experience my students will be forever grateful to have a place within their classroom to escape their everyday stresses. Throughout their lives, my students will remember not only the impact the tornado had on their school and neighborhood, but more importantly they will remember the positive, generous gift of a Reading Relief Corner.
