Mr. H.
Grades 6-8

I am a seventh grade Science Teacher for a school located in coastal North Carolina. It is my goal to expose students to as many student-centered authentic activities as possible, to increase student motivation and achievement in Science, Language Arts, and Art. My students are bright, enthusiastic and motivated to learn more about human body systems, human anatomy, and physiology. As a culminating activity for the Science and Language Arts curricula, the seventh graders perform a dissection and build 3-d models to present at our team-supported unit-"Rats." Students read a book related to rats and author a problem-solution essay written from the perspective of the rat! In past students memoirs, dissections have often been the most memorable moments of their entire seventh grade year! The relevance of this activity is far-reaching. Students not only make practical applications in Science, but interdisciplinary teaming among teachers allows students to experience an authentic project in language arts, science and art. Student learning outcomes are far-reaching. They include strengthening student understanding and skills of the intricate design of the human body, critical thinking skills concerning bodily functions, scientific inquiry, and literacy skills. What could be more engaging than dissecting a rat? Besides being an outstanding event for students, parents are also involved in the process. Imagine the enthrallment in the face of a parent who watches his/her child learn more about the human body by performing this comparative anatomy autopsy! (Please note that students are not forced to participate!) Please help student dreams, explorations and memories come true!
