My students need a laser pointer to practice their map & geography skills. The mobile locking computer unit will keep our high tech materials safe!

Save our resources! Do you know the feeling of being excited to use materials in school - only to find they've been moved, stolen, or misplaced? That's a challenge facing my students in the inner city of Chicago. My students are dying to learn, and we need a place to lock up our materials safely!
My students attend an urban Charter school that serves students in grades 6-12.
In 2012 we will graduate our first group of high school seniors! The majority of our students are low-income, free-lunch, minority students who have typically been under-served. Our goal is to catch our students up so that by the time they graduate high school, they are college-ready.
My students have major problems with basic geography skills. One of the major ways that I teach map skills and latitude and longitude is to use laser pointers on a wall map that I project from my computer on an LCD projector. This way, students can visualize the curving lines while locating places by their coordinates. The interactive nature of the laser-pointing engages students and really helps them understand the process. We are also in a building that has been frequently broken into. If I could lock all of our technological materials into a locking, mobile cabinet - I could wheel it into our school's secure safe daily - protecting my students' learning materials for years to come.
My project is important because donating to this project makes it possible for under-served students can have their materials protected.
Many of them live in neighborhoods where stealing and break-ins are the norm. School gives them a chance to break from this and just learn in a safe and engaging environment. Keeping these students' precious materials safe is key in their learning process. Students can then be engaged in History class for years to come at our school.
