Super Supplies for Super Readers

My students need school supplies, such as pens, pencils, post-it-noes, and colored paper, to start the new school year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you read something complicated, do you highlight the main idea? Do you write in the margin or flag the page with a post-it-note? These are the habits of a good reader. Without these supplies, my students will not develop the key habits for good reading.

My students are 10th graders in a small public college-prep high school in an urban setting in New York.

Almost all of our students qualify for financial assistance. Our students read at or below grade level. However, due to their hard work, our graduation rate is well above the city's rate of 63%. Even more exciting, all of our graduates have plans for college. Many of my students enjoy reading. In fact, the librarian can hardly keep any copies of the latest hot series, Hunger Games, on the shelves. However, they struggle with the complicated texts in their science and history courses. First, students must interpret the formatting, which can include text boxes an visual texts. These can be distracting because students are more familiar with the format for a work of fiction. Secondly, textbooks and primary sources often require prior knowledge, and my students may struggle with the text because they lack that knowledge.

My Project

Next year is my 10th year teaching students with big dreams and difficulties in the classroom. The supplies I've asked for improve reading levels, and I know this from experience. Students use the highlighters to mark items in the passage, such as main idea or conflict. The post-it-notes are helpful because students can record their thoughts as they read. I will use specific colors for specific tasks based on the color. For example, students will summarize the text on a blue post-it-note and ask clarifying questions on green. I use the colored paper to differentiate instruction because I will print easy, medium, and difficult text on different colors and students can select their own text. I've asked for pens and pencils because I like to help students who need one. Most importantly, these supplies make reading interactive and mirror the habits good readers use naturally.

Please fund my project for super supplies for super readers!

Without these supplies, students will miss the opportunity to learn good habits. These habits will help them now and in college. Our students don't just dream big - our students go to college! Donating to this project will help you be a part of something special. Please fund my project for super supplies for super readers!
