Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Benjamin Disraeli said, "Courage is fire, and bullying is smoke." Bullying has become a true crisis in our schools and our society. Current statistics say that one out of four kids is bullied. My students and I want to help create the fire of courage to stop bullying in our school.
Our school is a K-5 school in California.
Our enrollment is about 26% White and 60% Hispanic. We are a Title I school (55% of our students receive free or reduced lunch). Two years ago, my current school absorbed my former school, a rural elementary school that was 95% Hispanic and over 90% free and reduced lunch. The staff and students have been working hard to create a unified school community.
My Project
Apple has changed the way we use technology, especially with the iPod line of products. I chose to ask for an iPod Touch instead of another kind of video camera for three reasons. First, the iPod Touch has a very user friendly interface that most of my students are familiar with, so it will be simple for students to take videos. Second, the iPod Touch records excellent quality HD video. The last reason I chose the Ipod Touch is that it has basic video editing built in, and for a very small amount of money we can purchase iMovie, a powerful video editing application. This would allow students to do video editing right on the iPod Touch instead of tying up a classroom computer.
We have to meet students' basic needs before they can be academically successful.
A student who is hungry or sick or is being bullied at school is thinking about those things, not about the schoolwork. We need to make school a place where all children feel safe and empowered. Our anti-bullying video will help students understand bullying and know that they have the power to help stop themselves and others from being bullied.
