Informed voters? Caring community members? Involved citizens? These are the attributes I seek to promote in my classroom. Every child, every student, every young adult has something to gain and give to their community. It all starts with being informed.
The young adult students I work with are all in high school.
They struggle with standard academics. They also struggle with daily community and world events, as do many of their peers. They strive to fit in while making sense of their world.
In our large highly diverse urban school we promote values which are not always present in day-to-day life. Compassion, patience and understanding of others are paramount. We reinforce acceptance of cultures and beliefs from around the globe. TIME for Kids highlights these opportunities for discussions and perspectives.
My Project
TIME for Kids will bring an important weekly event into the classroom. It will provide these students the opportunity to read about their world at a level they can understand. It will promote conversation and community within our walls.
As the teacher, I have come to rely on TIME for Kids over the years. I have listened to active discussions on real and important events. I have witnessed the "a-ha!" moments of connections between self and the world. I have seen students transfer knowledge from TIME for Kids into a myriad of subject matters and curriculum.
Having an accompanying globe will help students realize our global needs and connections. It will provide a kinesthetic and visual medium to an often abstract concept. It will help the TIME for Kids articles come to life.
The high school students I work with will soon be out in the communities working and voting.
Despite their disabilities, they are able to learn and be productive citizens. The more relevant materials I can provide in the classroom, the more I am able to prepare them to be caring and informed decision makers, employees and neighbors.
