Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Aren't you more likely to pick up a book after you've heard a friend gush about how amazing it is? Well, podcasting will give my students the ability to rave about literature to a wide audience and hopefully use their voices to inspire others beyond our classroom to join the conversation!
Our middle school includes 6-8 graders and is located in New Mexico.
I teach 5 classes of gifted language arts. My students are in 6th grade and are designated as special education eligible, due to their high IQ's.
They are a fun, silly bunch with limitless curiosity and huge appetites for books. Our school has limited technology so the students crave opportunities to practice the skills they will need to succeed.
My Project
According to eMarket, "By 2013, 17 percent of U.S. Internet users, or 37.6 million people, will download a podcast at least once per month." Podcasting is clearly on the rise and I hope to get my students in on the ground floor! The beauty of podcasting is that you can create short audio files of whatever you want and then upload them to share with a global audience. Posting the files is free so the only real expense is getting the equipment (in our case, we just need the microphones and headphones).
My vision is to have students create weekly podcasts in which they:
*create book reviews
*interview school staff, students, and guests about favorite books and authors
*share original work written by students (poems, stories, etc.)
*discuss reading strategies and study skills
*share writing tips
We all know that when students feel they are producing work that will only be viewed by the teacher, motivation can go down. Podcasting makes the WORLD our audience!
There are so many things to accomplish in today's language arts classrooms.
We are responsible for teaching speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills. This podcasting project hits on all of these in a fun, meaningful way. If we are lucky enough to receive these items, they will get DAILY use! Students will experience the joy and satisfaction of writing engaging pieces, honing their public speaking skills, and sharing their thoughts with the larger community...including YOU! So tune in!
