The stories 5 and 6 year-olds can tell are amazing! My upcoming 1st graders need the tools it takes to turn their stories they can tell by speaking into stories on paper!
I am currently a 3rd grade teacher.
Next year I will be teaching 1st graders. I will also have the opportunity to move to 2nd grade with my class the following year. After teaching 2nd and 3rd grade for 5 years, I know how important it is to start writing off right. The school my students attend has 83% of the students on free and reduced lunch. According to our state tests, 47% of students passed the reading comprehension test. We are very low, but not low enough to get much financial support. My class size next year will be at maximum - 25 students. These students will include students with special needs and English language learners.
My Project
With your help, the resources I'm requesting will help support independent writing for students in great need. The items include journals for students to use to create their own writings daily and practice skills with teacher support. Books for students to publish their own writings in. Pencils and word spacers for students to use as tools when writing. Handwriting practice and learning centers for independent work. I have also requested a teacher resource book to help implement writer's workshop with younger students. These resources used together will help promote writing in my classroom. Students will have the opportunity to see themselves as authors. The book Amelia's Notebook will be used to support reading and allow students to see Amelia as a writer just like them.
As a 3rd grade teacher I can see the results of not having enough supplies or opportunities for successful writing.
My current 3rd grade students have needed support all year long on things such as capitals, periods, organization, ideas, sentence structure, fluent writing, voice, spelling, and neatness. I would like to have the opportunity to start my students out right in 1st grade and carry on into 2nd grade to prepare them for the upper grades. Thank you for your support!
