Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever considered a glue stick a luxury? Or thought it was a privilege to have your very own highlighter? For my students who often come to school without even a pencil, ALL supplies are a gift! While using such gifts, the kids are taught the value of materials through respect and gratitude.
I teach fourth grade at a Title 1 school in Arizona.
Our neighborhood is one in which families are working day in and day out to provide a better life for their kids. Over 90% of our families qualify for FREE lunch whereas the remaining percentage only pays a reduced fee. Our students are faced with violence, drugs, and many other events that require frequent police involvement. Though the students are faced with many challenges, they also come to school with a positive attitude and the belief that they CAN be successful.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting basic materials to help us start the year. The folders, notebooks, and labels will all be used to maintain both classroom and individual organization. The students will each have a homework folder, writer's journal, and math notebook. They will also be provided with a highlighter to keep throughout the year as we learn and practice strategies in all subjects! And of course, you can't forget the glue sticks! Each student will also be given a glue stick to be used on all the many ways that we make projects (or even note-taking) engaging and motivating!
Our class motto this past year was "AIMING for the stars!" As the year progressed, I was able to learn what "the stars" meant to each of them.
Whether their goals were to be a teacher, lawyer, or even an NFL star, I wanted to help them achieve those goals. Having the right supplies was a small step towards them reaching the stars, but it truly helped them feel valued and that they are worth it! Please help me provide the same opportunities to a new group of kids with a whole new set of dreams!
