Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am seeking funding for books to keep in my classroom library that are interesting and on the appropriate reading level of my students. I am a Middle School Teacher in the South Bronx, where I aim each year to have all of my students reach the NY State English Language Arts goal of completing 25 independent reading books. Many of my students are reading below grade level and it is difficult to get them to complete daily reading assignments. Many of these students are embarrassed to read lower level books in front of their peers and honestly I don't blame them. Low level/high interest books will help to address these students' needs. My students are savvy urban youth who are exposed to mature content through mass media. I need to have literature that will compete with the times in order to keep my students engaged in a book. Updating my classroom library with books that are new and relevant to the issues they face daily will make reading a source of pleasure rather than pain. Thank you for facilitating my students in becoming life long readers and understanding the joy of getting "lost" in a book.
