Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Books have the power to transport students to other worlds. My students are interested in learning more about the Underground Railroad and the significance of codes embedded in songs and quilts during that time in African American history.
Our school is in a high poverty community and resources are scarce.
We do not have a school library, and it becomes challenging to ensure that our students have access to books and materials that will inspire them to learn and grow. With so many budget cuts lately, it has been hard to get enough books into our students' hands.
My Project
My grade level colleagues and I want to plan an inquiry unit with a curricular focus on slavery, the Underground Railroad, and quilting. This interdisciplinary unit will provide opportunities across reading, writing, research, and math. The culminating activity for the study will be a class quilt that the students will donate to an organization that provides quilts for children and families in need. My students will learn about a significant time in American history, and they will also learn about compassion.
Donations to this project will allow three classrooms of students to learn from the past and make a difference in the present.
They will share their learning within their community and beyond. We cannot take on this project without your support.
