A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words: Cameras for Kids

My students need a digital camera. We try to provide cameras for students who do not have one of their own, but we're constantly coming up short on cameras to sign out to students.

My Students

Photography is one of the most powerful and influential forms of art that exists in our society. Every year, the photography program in our school plays host to over 300 students. We teach kids to see their world a little differently. There is beauty everywhere, even in the most difficult of places.

Our students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds.

Both in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomic status. This makes for a rich tapestry of personality and experience within our classrooms. However, despite their differences, our population seems cohesive. They laugh together, they struggle together, they share their commonalities while maintaining their own sense of individuality and cultural identity. In my class, they share their different experiences through their photography. From the boy who works the family farm, to the girl who lives in government housing in the downtown area, from the athlete to the musician, from the skateboarder to the cheerleader; all tell their stories with their cameras. And their stories are profound, joyous, beautiful and, at times, heartbreaking.

My Project

With over 300 students yearly, and many not able to purchase a camera for themselves, our yearly budget is strained to its' absolute limit. We try very hard to make sure that every student has a camera but, at length, we are always short. Sadly, the students who are unable to use a 'loaner camera' are often the very students who are at highest risk for failure. These are often students who have a tenuous connection to our school and to the learning herein and not having a camera for their photography class only serves to further the disconnect. We designate about two thousand dollars per year towards the purchase of new cameras but students are still going without. In this time of shrinking budgets, our situation worsens annually. Through this site, we are hoping to plug just a few more 'holes'. Every camera we receive is an opportunity for a student.

Each and every camera purchased through this site, will translate directly into an educational experience for a needy student in one of our classes.

This gift is significant and direct with its relationship to the student. They will use the camera to create photography, to connect to a class in this school, to feel pride in their efforts, to see their world in a different light and to bring to light for the rest of us, the world they know.
