Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day I work with students who claim they hate to read, and I believe this is due to the selection they are offered. By introducing Lit Circles into my classroom and giving students a choice in what they would like to read I am convinced that I can open my students minds to the joy of reading.
My students are in the 9th grade in Florida, and range in levels from the lowest-of-the-low to the best-of-the-best.
My students go to a Title I school which means a majority of them are on free or reduced lunch. Every week they are asked to bring in a book from home or from the library and I cannot tell you how many times a student of mine has told me that they do not own a single book. I've even had kids bring in phone books in order to receive the extra credit.
My students are the ones helping to put their food on the table for their family, while trying to get an education and enjoy life. My students are the kids on the basketball, football, track and swim team. My students are involved in the arts and who are trying to just get by.
My students are the ones who need to take responsibility for their own learning through Literature Circles.
My Project
I picked book titles that will not only inspire my students but will also educate them. The books picked are high-interest coming of age stories that address themes that my kids deal with daily bullies, fitting in, discovering oneself, censorship, overcoming obstacles and anything a 15 year old will come across in between.
In addition to the high interest themes I also chose books that are strong in allusions and connections. This will allow my students to look into symbols and the elements of literature at a higher, more intense level.
This project is important because reading is important.
It is my job to create successful people who are ready for the world. These titles coupled with literature circles which will encourage dialect, and independence will help to insure my students become life long readers.
