This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach reading to third grade bilingual students in a predominantly low-income neighborhood. Currently, 90% of my students' fluency is at least one grade level behind. Studies have shown that students who lack fluency oftentimes struggle with reading comprehension as well. In my classroom we practice checking fluency in partners, however, students have a difficult time practicing at home since they don't have a stopwatch and are not yet able to tell time with a second hand on a watch. If I could have a stopwatch for each of my students to take home, I know that not only would they have the resources but they will also be more motivated to improve their fluency with this activity they love doing! Thank you for helping my students become better readers.
