My Students

Creating art projects and having them displayed all around the classroom is one of the most empowering things I can do for my students. They all look forward to doing projects in class which help them synthesize what they're learning.

In teaching a group of 135 sixth graders, I have come across many different learning styles.

I would like to be able to target each student's learning style in a creative and effective way. My students attend a school were projects and labs seem to be a reward in Science class more than the norm. I have done my best to ensure that each student is given an opportunity to participate in activities which stimulate their senses. This often becomes difficult with minimal resources.

My Project

I make sure that at the end of each lesson students complete a culminating project which provides students an outlet to artistically show what they learned. Many students have incredible artistic ability which is often not tapped into during day to day lessons. These culminating projects range from group posters, comic strips, portraits, and murals using dry and erase markers on white boards which I then hang up in the classroom. Having a classroom set of markers will help them create these projects such as the one we will be working on with watching plants grow. Unfortunately, students don't often have the time management skills they need to complete these projects. By allowing students the role of "time keeper", they learn about time management as well as feel a sense of leadership. Students will enjoy tracking the growth of trees while starting our ecology unit by having them in the classroom and monitoring their growth with their new art supplies.

These supplies will really help my students tap into their creative sides and allow them to complete art work with as much color as they need.

Many students are very artistic, but unfortunately this isn't always noticed through worksheets and graphic organizers. By providing students with materials which help them express themselves artistically, I hope to further encourage participation and learning in my class.
