Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imperialism in Africa? Who in their right mind would want to read that? My students, who are preparing for the AP English Lit Exam would love a chance to read Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness.
My AP English Literature students are an inspiration.
They have opted to take one of the most challenging classes offered at the school both as a way of bolstering their academic resumes and as a way of getting new skills. Our school and district, though, are not as supportive of their aspirations. They enter my college-level class without the literary experiences necessary to help them be successful.
Moreover, my students have not had as much access to rich texts as other students. By supporting this project, you will allow for increased equity and access by providing much needed books.
My Project
Heart of Darkness is a masterpiece of literature. In this text, Joseph Conrad explores Charles Marlow's journey into Africa. This journey is both literal and symbolic, as he grapples with the darkness of what he finds there. This is one of the most challenging texts that high school students encounter, but it gives students a firm grounding in reading a highly symbolic text and in working on fledgling interpretative skills.
For AP students, Heart of Darkness is an important text to encounter because it allows rich discussions of a variety of issues, including the nuts and bolts of literary criticism.
This book will give my students a solid foundation and a chance to do well on the AP exam itself.
