Love For Literacy! ESL Students Adore Graphic Novels
My students need 25 graphic novels, such as "Romeo and Juliet", to help them visualize and acquire their new second language, and a book center to hold the books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine being in your first year of English instruction, while not starting with your counting, but jumping right into Least Common Factor. Being in the 5th grade, they should theoretically be on 5th grade reading level, some are in both, but most are 5th grade + reading level... in Spanish.
These students absolutely love to learn.
I am blessed to teach 64 funny and intelligent young ladies who are driven and curious. I have taught them to embrace the phrase 'This is hard, BUT I like a challenge" and that is certainly what we face. Most students have been on the bilingual track, transitioning into their first year in English, however, many have come to the United States within the past year or two. We have made tremendous growth this year, they came in with English reading levels around Second grade, and we have jumped quite a bit.
My Project
With an elementary school of just under 1,000 students, it is very difficult for us to schedule library time. I am usually able to get 1 slot a week, but due to book fairs, tutors, and odd scheduling issues, many times students are left without books.
They FLAME through these books, several of my students have finished Wimpy Kid books over a night or two. Our library has several graphic novels, like a Baby Mouse, however, they are usually reserved or checked out. These kids love them! I took a class on Graphic Novels my senior year of college, and I fell in love as well. I wish that I would have had earlier exposure.
The books I strategically picked range widely. My students like Shakespeare, adore Wimpy Kid books, as well as the Baby Mouse collection. I have bought books for my classroom earlier and have in place a 'check-out system' which they are very respectful of. The visuals and pictures really help build their vocabulary, and their confidence raises with the speed of reading.
Your donations will help young students expand their admiration for reading and demonstrate not only my belief in its importance, but also the fact that donors agree and believe in it, too!
They have been making leaps and bounds with their reading, and this will give them a plethora of exercise for their most prize possession- their growing brain! They will love this so much!
