"We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction." I read this in a book recently and thought of my students during a writing lesson. I balanced the chart on my knees and wrote as a chorus of "I can't see!" rose from the carpet.
I teach a class full of energetic, inquisitive ELL 2nd graders in a small Texas town, in a high needs community.
Many students come from homes that are unable to provide basic supplies, not to mention school supplies. 80% of my class is on free lunch or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
A teaching easel will give me a place to create and refer back to our class-created "anchor charts" as we learn new concepts. They will later be hung around the classroom for all to see.
A teaching easel will give me a place to work on a whiteboard or with magnetic materials when teaching whole group or small group lessons to students who are just learning to read and write the English language.
A teaching easel will provide a space for magnetic letters or whiteboard markers that students may use independently during our reading block, as well as dividing space to create an additional learning center.
As you can see, this one item will have MANY uses in our classroom! Please help me to support the needs of my students. They are a wonderful, enjoyable group and they work hard every day to improve their reading and writing
skills, but we need your help to really make it happen.
Your donation will make it possible for me to create a better structure and flow for my reading and writing lessons and enable a powerful visual aid for those students who need to see the writing process in action,
therefore helping my students to succeed!
