Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching fractions and decimals is often hindered by the absence of manipulatives. We can compare fractions of a pizza or the sections of a Hershey bar, but they are limited in their effect. Providing individual hands-on fraction groupings brings the examples to life.
Our school is a program improvement school in a lower socio-economic area.
Although we are not an urban school, we have many of the influences associated with a urban setting. Many of our students come from homes where English is not the home language, so learning through textbooks often is a challenge. With family math and literacy nights we often see the parents are working as hard as the students to grasp the concepts of math. The support of the educational system is strong with parents providing as much support as they can, however our students still often struggle with basic math skills.
My Project
Mini fraction and decimals tiles will allow the students to be able to physically compare and contrast the basic fractions by grouping them and learning their relationships. The same process can be utilized with the mini decimal tiles. The combination of the two sets will also let them see the relationships of fractions to decimal and back again. This is the basic background to percentages, rates, and many of the consumer math applications they will be faced with in the real world.
I believe the fraction and decimal bar kits will allow for a greater understanding of the relationships that fractions have of the whole, decimals of their comparison to the fractions, and how to physically see the links with consumer applications.
