My students need a listening center daily repetition of vocabulary words, sight words for reading, phonemic awareness to remediate articulation errors.
I serve 85 students - many have language concerns due to a "mother tongue" not English. They need daily repetition to acquire the words to communicate with peers and teachers. Some children need to hear correct sound production and hear what they say - the cardreader records teacher and student.
My 85 students are PK,K,1st and 2nd.
I have students from Thailand,Puerto Rico,Mexico,Bulgaria who need to build their English vocabularies. I serve children with multiple articulation errors making them difficult to understand as well as others with language problems such as poor grammar, difficulty following directions, trouble with concepts and inability to form a coherent sentence. I serve children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabled, Developmentally Delayed as well as Gifted! Many of these students experience frustration with their communication problems. Our school is a "regular elementary school" with preschool through fifth grade.
My Project
I have students who need to hear themselves produce sounds they are trying to remediate. The cardreader AKA language master permits recording of both the teacher's model and student's voice separately! The headphones provide a quiet focused listening experience and the cardreader is easily operated by children. It also assists in the teaching of vocabulary to youngsters who know little to no English. The blank cards are easily recorded and I personally glue pictures/or draw them on the card and carefully print the word. This way, the child sees a picture, sees the printed word, and hears it pronounced correctly. I have one cardreader which is not enough to handle the number of children who need to use it daily.
The earlier one intervenes with children demonstrating various deficits the more likely one is to affect a change for the better in these children.
By having more equipment to serve more children at a time, I can give them the additional practice they sometimes do not get by sharing a single piece of equipment.
