This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Expanding creative horizons is something our school takes pride in doing. Unfortunately, we have limited resources for our students to really explore all possibilities within the arts realm; especially digital photography.

My students are creative, innovative, and caring people who come from a major metropolitan city, but enjoy a small-town environment.

They choose to attend a school with less than 200 students and only 7 teachers because they don't want to be just another face in the crowd. They want to be important, recognized, and appreciated as individuals, not just one of 200 or more students any one teacher might have. Students at our school know they can come here and get one-on-one instruction if they need it; they know they can get to know their teachers and classmates better than they would at a large school, and they know that at our school, someone is watching out for them. Our teachers will only meet with up to 75 students as opposed to the possible 200 at a regular public school, so our students know that their faces are recognized, their names are known, and their educational needs are being addressed on a personal level.

My Project

We are asking for a digital Nikon SLR camera to help jump start our digital photography program and help enhance our school's yearbook class. Currently, our school owns one camera that is being shared among 7 students who are either taking or are interested in taking digital photography that I offer as an independent study. By independent, I mean, really independent, as our school lacks the resources to make this a full class with 25 cameras and 25 computers equipped with photo editing software; resources that come standard with a normal public school. Now, students either need to own their own camera, fight over the one we have, or borrow my personal camera. The one SLR camera we have is also used by our entire yearbook class, so another one would go a long way for multiple programs and potential programs at our school.

One more SLR camera would be a step in the right direction for our students to not only expand their knowledge of technology, but allow them to explore more creative avenues than the ones currently offered at our school.

Although it's only one camera, it would allow so many more students the opportunity to use and understand the technology. It's one step closer to a proper creative photography class, and a more professional-looking yearbook.
