KABOOM! Science Experiments to Ignite Students' Minds

My students need hands-on science experiments, such as Knex and an erupting volcano model, in order to see how different objects change in an instant.

My Students

3.2.1... "KABOOM!!!" Those are sounds my students love to hear during science class. Unfortunately, my students can only hear those sounds through video and not in real life.

Our school in North Carolina serves PK-5th grade and we have about 400 students.

We have 60% African American, 23% Caucasian, and 17% Hispanic students currently at our school. The class sizes at the school have been decreasing throughout the past two years since we are a “school of choice”. Since we are a “School of choice” that means parents and students can opt out and go to another school off a selected list. Most grade levels have between 15-19 students in a class, which means we can form smaller groups and give students the attention they deserve. Our students are in continuous movement going from place to place. These students struggle to get up and to school each day and every time they make it to school, we praise them. Students are the most important people for us in our building. Every subject and activity that we provide at school is geared toward our students. As a school, we are constantly changing our curriculum and our objectives in order to reach all learners.

My Project

Our students need a first hand look at certain science experiments. These experiments will touch on a child's multiple intelligences and will let them create their own hypotheses rather than have to inform them of it. The experiments that I have picked are: Bridge building- which will show students how a strong base will hold a structure. Another experiment is the volcanoe. Students are constantly reading and talking about exploding volcanoes but have never seen one in real life. Hopefully with these experiments they will be able to take what they have read about and watch the wonder.

I realized that something was missing from my students.

The passion for learning. I struggled to put together “fun” lessons for my students because I knew that no matter how fun something can be, if they do not understand or better yet, do not want to understand the lesson is pointless. I know that if my students cannot actually see or touch something then it does not exist. Being able to provide physical models of certain experiments for a child to complete will open their minds.
