Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If technology is the fuel to the future, how can we expect students to leave high school prepared without the proper technology resources?

My students are creative, free-thinking and innovative individuals.

Our school has only 200 students and 7 teachers, which is great for the small class sizes, one-on-one attention, and great student –teacher relationships. The down side is that we can’t offer a variety of electives that are as diverse as our students, so they’re stuck with very limited choices. Their interests are so widespread and unique; however our elective selection is not. We do our best to nurture the interests of our students, but we lack the resources to do so. Our students choose to come to our school, despite the limited course catalog, because they love what we can offer; individualized attention, a caring and small environment, and a very close-knit community of teachers who are genuinely invested in the interests of the students, their future, and their education.

My Project

Our school would be so privileged to have the same resources that come standard at other schools in our area. We are asking for 2 iMac computers to start a digital photography program, supplement our video production program, and eventually start a graphic design program. Currently, our school is equipped with student computers that are, at best, 6 years old, and in reality probably older than that. They have trouble running programs, and are mainly used for research and word processing. At this point, they can’t handle any creative applications without crashing or freezing. We currently have one iMac that only 6 students are able to use at this time. One is doing digital photography as an independent study, and the other 5 work on the daily announcements in iMovie. From time to time, students can use the iMac for creative projects for other classes with my help, but it has to be on their own time outside of class. Having several more iMacs would open doors for students to explore the creative avenues that are a huge part of our society today: digital photography and graphic design.

This project is so important, because our students choose to come to our school sacrificing the programs they could have at a traditional high school.

Our students should have the same educational opportunities within our walls including one-on-one attention that makes our school and students thrive. Without help, our school can’t get the funding for an entire iMac lab that comes standard with traditional public schools, but we can certainly start small.
