This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Scat? What's scat?" "I don't know yet, I'll look it up." "Hahaha! Whoa!"

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income area of Northern California.

We are considered a Title I school as the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a very high percentage of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

My Project

My classroom has a heavy earth-friendly, outdoor oriented theme. When we make our way outside, however, one crucial element we lack is a reference source for our unanswerable questions. I'll readily admit that I don't know every animal print, berry, or leaf on our path! I am asking for a series of books (Take Along Guide) that my students can use to look up their new-found questions. Not only are these books written at a fourth grade level, they also work in conjunction with our school's reading program. With titles like "Tracks, Scats, and Signs," "Rocks, Fossils, and Arrowheads" (also fourth grade science content), and "Wildflowers, Blooms, and Blossoms," each of my students will readily find something to interest them.

With books like these available, my students will be able to find answers to their own questions, learn nature facts before encountering the content in tangible form, and also continue their reading goals and discoveries.
