Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are just starting to love to read. We have reached a point where we know the level at which each of our students is reading, and now we can customize units to meet their needs!
I teach 10th grade English at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
This is a very special international studies public charter school, which is a school of choice for these students. Every student who graduates from our school will have met the A-G requirements to enter a UC or CSU school. For many of these students, they will be the first generation in their families to attend college.
For most of our students, English is a second language, and many of them are behind in their reading skills. Some of them are behind several grade levels.
My Project
Last year, thanks to the generous support of donors from Donors Choose, for the very first time, we used a new reading program to help differentiate instruction in our Holocaust literature unit with a variety of literature circle books. It was highly successful. Instead of having all the students read the same book, they read books in groups with students reading at the same reading level.
Wonderfully, this year, we have a GOOD problem. When we first started this program, we had a vast majority of students who were behind grade level, so when I chose literature circle books last year, I chose books within a few grades of my average students. This year, we actually have a lot of students reading above their grade level! This is a good problem to have, but we need a more challenging book for these students for our Holocaust literature circle unit.
My colleague and I have chosen We Are Witnesses because it is a collection of first hand accounts from the Holocaust.
Learning about the Holocaust through the memoirs of teens who lived it can have a profound impact upon my teenage students.
It can truly make them change the world. Please make a difference with this book!
