Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think back to the time when you first developed a passion for books as a child, and how you loved being read to. My 23 Kindergarten students are just now beginning to realize what is behind a closed cover of a book.
My students attend a Title I school district which is in a high poverty stricken community/neighborhood.
A large number of them are eligible for the free school lunch program. And, most of the five and six year olds have limited access to books and let alone modern technology in their home environment. However, this does not keep them from looking forward to story time whether it is during shared or independent reading time. They love listening to a variety of topics or themed books. All of them look forward to Mondays, because they get to visit the school library to select and check-out a book to keep for a week at a time. They have discovered the Biscuit series and love the adventures he gets into.
My Project
The iPod Touch will allow the students to listen to a large number of stories during independent reading time. Most of them have not been read to before attending their first year in a public school system.
Plus, I have selected books from the Biscuit series because I know how much my students have developed a love for him and his tactics. These books will make a huge impact in that it will also increase their vocabulary and develop comprehensive skills. They will be exposed to the concepts of print.
A donation to this project will allow me with the opportunity to share the books with the students. In addition, I will be able to offer the children with a larger selection of books they can take home with them and share with their families. It will help them develop a passion for books which will only lead to endless possibilities that will positively affect their entire life.
The iPod Touch and selected books will provide my students a larger variety of reading materials that they do not have access to at home.
This project will help enhance their future educational requirements; plus, it will ensure the students have an array of books not only in their classroom environment but also be able to take home with them.
