Mrs. Hovis from Richmond VA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need reading materials that support their learning experience in science, such as an Earth Science Photo Book Set and a complete set of Learning Science Libraries.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Reading is a daily battle for the students I work with. This struggle not only affects their reading grades, but it also affects their math, science and social studies grades. I regularly see my students struggle to decode content words on a test, which prevents them from achieving success.
My students are inspiring!
They deal with issues that many adults never face in a lifetime. A majority of my students live in single parent households with an income less than $24,000. In addition, a great deal of students are being raised by a family member other than a biological parent. 90% of the students are African American and are on free or reduced lunch. They are challenged in so many ways, yet they continue to strive and amaze me each and every day.
These science reading materials that I have requested, will help the students improve their reading skills while reinforcing the information learned in science through books. It will allow the students to learn more about information that intrigues them. With very few science books available for my students, I find it very difficult to incorporate science into my literacy rotations each day. Exposing these students several in many different ways will allow them to become more familiar and proficient in these areas. The science comprehension center that I have requested, will give the students a chance to improve their reading skills while reviewing their science facts in a collaborative setting. This grant would help lay the foundation for science enrichment. All the resources I have requested will both enhance the students learning in reading and science, while making the experience engaging and fun.
These students are our future.
It is my duty to do everything within my means to prepare them for the years ahead. I am constantly challenging myself as an educator to push my students in science, as this truly is the gateway to the future. Help me motivate these students by giving them the resources needed to not only be successful, but to be confident in their daily lives. I believe If I can motivate my students now, their possibilities are endless.
