This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Speed = Distance / Time; Acceleration = Final velocity - Initial Velocity / Time; Force = Mass X Acceleration; Momentum = Mass X Velocity...Blah, Blah, Blah divided by Blah plus Uber Blah, times OH MY BLAH!! Imagine calculating these problems without a calculator. That's what we're forced to do.

My science scholars are 7th grade students in an under-funded urban school in Missouri.

They struggle daily to acquire basic supplies such as pencils and paper. We use the backsides of recycled paper that we've gathered from other teachers' wastebaskets. We often break our pencils in half so that two students can share the same pencil. Given these financial constraints, it is highly unlikely that we'll ever be able to afford calculators.

My Project

If we had access to these calculators, my science scholars would be more willing and able to complete their assignments. It never fails that any time I introduce a new scientific formula, more than half of my students immediately disengage from the lesson. Their motivation level diminishes simply because they lack the one basic tool that could make their learning less strenuous. With these calculators, my students could worry more about mastering the content instead of worrying about whether they'll get a failing grade because they haven't been properly taught how to multiply, divide, or replace formulaic variables with numbers.

Through your generosity, my students will be able to calculate concepts such as speed, acceleration, force, momentum, volume, weight, and work.

Understanding scientific concepts and having confidence in their ability to perform accurate calculations will prevent my science scholars from tuning out the science simply because of the math. Help me remove the fear and replace it with hope!
