My students need high quality and high interest books, paper to make Reading Response Journals, and colored pencils, pencils, and glue to use with the journals.
Do you know that every year millions of children suffer from summer reading loss? The teachers at my school crunched the numbers and discovered that about a 1/5 of the students who end the year at grade-level return in the fall having dropped a level in reading.
In fact, a student who ends Kindergarten at Mill Park on grade-level in reading and continues to make a year's growth in a year at school--BUT never reads over the summer--leaves Mill Park about a year and half below grade level!
Most of our students live in poverty and are immigrants to the United States. There are over 25 languages spoken in our school!
My Project
I want to help combat this problem by putting books in the hands of my kids to read over the summer. My program will include getting each kid a public library card and equipping them with Reading Response Journals where they can write about their books by retelling the story, describing their favorite character, and responding with connections they make to the text. The book that they keep will be one that is at their reading level and interests them. This book will be a big incentive for them to read all summer long!
By making a donation to my project, you will help ensure that children will have quality literature to read over the summer to keep up their reading stamina and skills.
Thank you so much for making a difference in my student's lives!
