Blogging with a Netbook!

My students need a netbook and mouse to be able to share their thoughts with the world via their blogs and wikis!

My Students

I am a second-year, fourth grade teacher with a wonderful group of students who love to learn!

I work with an amazing group of students in upstate New York.

The location of our small district is unique, and my class is comprised of children who come from urban, rural, and suburban locations, all on the border of a Native American reservation. This is not a wealthy area with about 1/3 of the students eligible for the free/reduced price lunch program. Only about half of my students have computers at home, and very few have outside access to the technology with which I would like to encourage them.

My Project

In fourth grade my students are required to take more state tests than any other grade level. While test-taking strategies are an important skill to have, I would love to be able to utilize another more authentic (and exciting!) way to assess my students throughout the year. We have very recently started to use blogs and wikis to collaborate on our writing, which the students truly enjoy! The only problem is that the one computer lab in our school is fairly inaccessible, and the one computer that we have in our classroom is connected to our SB and rarely available for the students to use. I would love to have a netbook (possibly building up to a set of netbooks!) that are dedicated SOLEY to student use!

My students and I would greatly appreciate any small amount that you might donate.

With fourth grade being such a test-heavy year in New York State, I would love to show my students through authentic and outside-the-box assessments that there are more ways to succeed than paper and pencil tests!
